Municipal teams treating Torrevieja’s palms

Carmen Gómez Candel, Torrevieja’s Councillor for Parks and Gardens, announced that municipal teams are now pruning and treating the town’s palm trees in accordance with the guidelines laid out by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, which requires councils to carry out mandatory phytosanitary measures for the control and eradication of the pest "Rhynchophorus ferrugineus", the red palm weevil.

Work got underway last Monday and will continue until the end of February during which time the authorities will be required to carry out a number of road closures in the city, although she assures everyone that these will be kept to an absolute minimum. A full list of the closures is available from the Policia Locale.

Ms Gomez said that the council will also be carrying out treatment against the red palm weevil to those palms which are in public ownership. She said that her staff are available to the owners of infected palms, and the Technical Team will provide advice and treatment in order to prevent and eradicate the plague of the red palm weevil in the city.
